CHARACTER INFO

Character: Wriothesley
Canon: Patch 6.2 - Update Luna III
Age: ~33
- Disclaimer: Genshin Impact doesn't give characters canonical ages. However, it's mentioned that Wriothesley was arrested and sentenced as teenager (or roughly between the ages of 13 to 18) and at double his original sentencing age, he became the Administrator of the Fortress of Meropide. By the Fontaine Archon Quest begins, he's resided as the Administrator for three years. Of course, these remain estimates as his actual DOB is unknown... and he has changed his own birthday.

Background Information:
(TW: Child Abuse, Murder, and Trafficking)

There once was a boy name [redacted]. He was an orphan abandoned on the streets of Fontaine, left to raise himself with the help of the local melusines. One day, however, [redacted] would be adopted by a local couple well-known for taking in orphans and fostering them to be adopted by families, giving them actual homes. It was there [redacted] thought he would get to have a normal childhood, and maybe be adopted himself in the future.

But it wasn't long until he learned the truth: that the couple was raising and selling children. What was worse, the children that didn't make the cut were... disposed of. Horrified by this revelation, [redacted] fled the house, but didn't leave Fontaine. Though he could have gone to another nation, the reality was that those children - the ones he actually considered family - were in danger, and he didn't think anyone would help nor would the operations stop. So, as a teenager, [redacted] would return to his once home and murder his parents, nearly dying in the process in the ensuing chaos. By 'fate' or 'luck', he would awaken handcuffed in a hospital bed and be asked a few questions.

"What's your name?"

... Wriothesley. (Not that they knew, but he'd seen the name in an obituary.)

"When's your birthday?"

... Today. (November 23rd... a good day to be reborn.)

When he eventually stood on trial, the boy now named Wriothesley would not deny his actions, but lay everything out in honest and illuminating detail that could not be denied. His 'Guilty' sentencing came swiftly, and down into the depths of the sea would he be banished in the Fortress of Meropide, mostly forgotten by the surface world. Years later, he would become the Warden, the Administrator, and the Duke of the Fortress of Meropide.

Personality: The Duke of Meropide is not a man many know anymore. He rules, after all, over those sentenced in court and exiled from the Overworld for their just punishment; and in those rare moments he does step above, no one knows what he looks like, and that is very much intentional. Wriothesley's a man who makes an impression when present, but manages to skulk in the shadows when he's not needed. His imposing figure, built and scarred by hardships faced in the past, makes many hesitant to speak to him... until he asks you to join him for tea.

Despite his shaky background, Wriothesley's a typically calm and savvy individual, almost appearing laidback. He's capable of perceiving people through their actions and words, getting to their core through conversations and other methods if necessary. And despite no mentions of a formal education, he's quick to pick up on instructions and gain necessary information when he seeks it out. It's through listening to others, after all, that he made his own contingency plan for the Prophecy, and also sought and learned the origins of the Fortress of Meropide: that being, it was built to watch and contain the Primordial Sea. Because he comes across as personable, Wriothesley is well-liked among the prisoners, and he has - in turn - created a place that allows them to thrive despite being a place of punishment.

Of course, Wriothesley only comes across this way.

Buried under the layers of years, the Duke still retains anger and guilt over his actions to the point he's not sure if he killed his parents out of vengeance for the discarded children or for his own revenge. His childhood was bleak; he thought he had the chance to experience a normal childhood, but those memories are tainted. At some point, he gazed over his own case file and the names of those children he saved, but he never reached out to them, figuring he's better off dead to them. Because of his experience, he tries to make things better for others around him - give them 'tranquility', so to speak - by upholding justice and order even if cruelty ends up being necessary. Meanwhile, he isolates himself behind charisma and kindness because he doesn't know if he can trust anyone again. Fortunately, he still has individuals like his Head Nurse Sigewinne and Iudex Neuvillette watching over him, but that's about it.

However, despite his inability to trust many, Wriothesley's 'nice' and 'hospitable' personality can become non-existent when someone poses a threat to his tranquility or puts others under his care at risk. Back when he arrived in the Fortress, Credit Coupons were everything, bought everything, and having none meant struggling again. Wriothesley finds value in the people of the Fortress and, therefor, changed the power Credit Coupons and provides welfare meals to everyone so they don't struggle to survive. Full well he knows he's in a position where he can easily abuse power, but he has no desire to do so. Contradictory to his inability to trust as it may be, he only wishes to protect.

Abilities & Inventory:
Abilities
• Cryo Vision: Upon sentencing to the Fortress of Meropide, Wriothesley gained a Cryo Vision, a special gem said to be gifted from the Gods. Originally keeping it hidden, Wriothesley's an adept user of the ice powers it grants, blending it most often into his boxing and using it to power-up his mechanical gauntlets. And though it's not fully part of his kit, he does show capable in cutscenes to have the ability to make icicles and form sheets thick enough to stop bullets.

For his in-game abilities and talents (aka when the gloves come out), have a wikia link: Here

• Boxing - Southpaw: Upon initial arrival in the Fortress, and before he would take the mantle of Administrator, survival was determined by the number of Credit Coupons an inmate could get their hands on. One of the best ways to earn coupons was through fights in the Pankration Ring. Considering he used crudely crafted gloves to kill his parents, Wriothesley decides to just pick up boxing and learns how to properly fight in the ring in order to survive himself. Years have improved his skills as he regularly exercises and sometimes still fights in the Pankration Ring. Whether or not he uses his gloves matters on the danger or severity of a situation; in other words, how quickly a fight needs to end.

• Mechanic: To originally deal with his parents, and later face larger opponents in the Pankration Ring, Wriothesley learned to work with metal and tools in order to make his mechanical gloves. They've gone through changes, repairs, and overhauls throughout the years, improving as Wriothesley has gotten better materials. He's become quite the handyman since, understanding even the complex workings of Fontanian meka and helping maintain the Fortress in general.
- NOTE: His Utility Passive from his Talents above applies here, giving him a chance to craft extra with the right supplies.

• Sewing: He's not tailor, but he is able to mend clothes to wearable conditions or add additions to clothing such as hidden pockets.

• Tea Connoisseur: Wriothesley loves tea and making tea. Think of it as his method of meditation, and something that brings him ease. He loves making a pot and enjoying it while doing just about... anything. He even enjoys to share with others if it helps ease tensions. If one can't enjoy a moment, well... it says a lot about that person.

Inventory
Night's Chilling Howl - As described in game: "Wriothesley's outfit. It radiates both dignity and strength, with the rugged gray wolf chain serving as the mark of his rulership over the Fortress of Meropide". Consists of knee-high boots, light gray pants, belt, tie, vest, button-up shirt, black bandages, half-gloves, chain, and a coat with fur-collar trim.

• Cryo Vision - Attached to a chain. It hangs on his back off his left shoulder.

• Handcuffs - Just a pair of handcuffs. Uses them rarely for arrests he personally handles.

• Mechanical gloves - A pair of mechanical gloves he normally wills away via his Vision. He uses them to amplify his strength if needed and powers them up further by using his Cryo abilities in combination with them.

• Sticker - ... he doesn't know how that got there. A sticker Sigewinne likely put on his coat before he found the bottle.

ARMADA SELECTION

Corsairs. While Wriothesley could fit either faction, Wriothesley has long taken a place among exiles and outcasts, making decisions that might be morally questionable, but also acting within the bounds of most laws. He sees people like himself capable of change, though, it does take work and a willingness to seek repentance.
